On their last UK gig before they jet off to SXSW, Make Model make sure that Glasgow won't forget about them in their absence. The motley crew of six were the highlight of the night, despite being the second act on the bill in support of Editors.
Meekly announcing that they were meant to warm the audience up, as most openers are meant to do, this act need not mutter the words; it was obvious from the first number that they would melt us down.
New single "The LSB" opens with a saccharine hit of bells reminiscent of "Do They Know It's Christmas?", but quickly injects that taste with a jagged structure coated in both hushed lyrics from all and shrieks, courtesy of Aimi Gold.
If you can make out the rushed lyrics you'll find that they're a treat on their own with contradictory twists like, "We got our weapons and our bubble gum".
At times the vocals of Aimi and Phil conjure the likes of Mates of State, what with their baa?s and then their requests for hand claps, but such a comparison does them little justice.
"Czech Neck", a far more subdued number, featured dreamy vocals, and bursts of organized shouts. At times Aimi is a bit too abrasive, but with so many guys around her on stage, one can?t blame her for wanting her voice to get heard.
The demanding track features lines like: "I've got a message for you, gotta make me happy, you've gotta bring me sunshine", but it's gentle delivery is far from off-putting. In fact it's doubtful that any listener would deny the request after hearing the song.
This sextet is sure to wow SXSW audiences, but hopefully we'll get 'em back round here before too long.
